Plot summary
Bob Megan, a former air force investigator, is called in when paratroopers vanish from the air during training jumps. His inquiries take him to a military research laboratory run by Dr Matthews, where he has repeated encounters with a woman named Lorna, who disappears again after each of their meetings. One of the jumpers is picked up barely alive, and he dies soon after reaching the laboratory; an autopsy by Dr Julie Slade shows that his biochemistry has been altered. Megan learns that every missing man had received spaceflight training, and Matthews suggests that the men are being changed to live somewhere other than Earth.
