Plot summary
His mother stole bread whenever she needed a cell in which to give birth, and Vidocq arrived as her twelfth child. He grew up moving in and out of jail, and as the story opens he and his cellmate Emile Vernet break out with a file that Vernet's aunt Ernestine smuggles inside a birthday cake. The two make for Paris, posing for a church painter before stealing the horse Vidocq sits on. In Paris, Uncle Hugo, head of Vernet's criminal family, sends the fugitives into the army with a forged commission naming Vidocq Lieutenant Rousseau. Waiting in Marseille to ship out for Napoleon's Egyptian campaign, Vidocq meets the singer Loretta and takes her ruby garter. Two years on, back in Paris, he charms his way into the chateau of the jewel-laden Marquise De Pierremont.
