Plot summary
Harry Quincey, a middle-aged bachelor, designs fabric at a mill in Corinth, a small New England town, where younger people call him Uncle Harry. He shares the family mansion with his sisters, the younger Lettie and the older Hester; the family money went in the Great Depression, and his wages support them. Lettie spends her days in bed claiming ailments. Deborah Brown, a designer newly arrived from New York City, draws Harry's interest. Hester approves of the match; Lettie, domineering and jealous, watches it with suspicion.

Universal's production manager Martin Murphy ordered re-cuts and a new "dream ending" to win PCA approval; director Robert Siodmak refused to shoot it, so an uncredited Roy William Neill shot the final scene, one of five endings tested.SPOILER
The planned screenplay showed Harry guilt-stricken over an unpunished crime, waiting at the town's station to be sent to a mental institution; censor Joseph Breen accepted it because the Production Code Association would reject a criminal left unpunished, and earlier RKO and Twentieth Century Fox adaptations were left unrealised after his objections.- The film did poorly at the box office, and because of the studio's conduct, producer Joan Harrison ended her association with Universal and produced her next film for RKO.
