Plot summary
Alex Joyce is an English businessman; his wife Katherine is more sensitive. They have been married eight years without children. They drive to Italy to get rid of a villa outside Naples that Alex's uncle Homer left him, and stay there during the trip. The journey stirs Katherine's memories of Charles Lewington, a poet she knew who has died. The villa's caretakers are Tony Burton, an Englishman living in Italy, and his Italian wife Natalia. Misunderstandings and jealousy soon push Alex and Katherine to spend their days apart.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Journey to Italy (1954)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Roberto Rossellini gave his cast their lines only shortly before filming each scene, leaving them little chance to prepare or rehearse; George Sanders described the director's methods and their effect on the actors in his 1960 autobiography Memoirs of a Professional Cad.
- Journey to Italy performed badly at the box office and was largely a critical failure, yet it had a profound influence on New Wave filmmakers working in the 1950s and 1960s.
- The film was first intended as an adaptation of Colette's novel Duo, but when Rossellini could not get the rights he was forced to write a screenplay that differed sufficiently from the novel.
