Plot summary
In 1824 in Bangor, Maine, a cruel girl named Jenny Hager pushes Ephraim Poster into a river, though he cannot swim, and she waits until Judge Saladine comes by before diving in and taking credit for the rescue. Years later she is a beautiful, heartless and manipulative young woman, the daughter of an abusive, drunken widower who whips her when he learns she has flirted with a sailor. She secretly plans to marry Isaiah Poster, the much older timber baron who is the richest man in town, while his mild-mannered son Ephraim studies at college in Cambridge, Massachusetts. When Ephraim comes home, Isaiah treats him unkindly and does not know that the boy and Jenny were once sweethearts.
