Plot summary
In eighteenth-century England, a young orphan named John Mohune travels to the Dorset village of Moonfleet. He is placed in the care of Jeremy Fox, his mother's former lover, a refined man mixed up with smugglers and pirates. The two are forced to flee, and together they must decode a coded message that points to a fabulous diamond hidden long ago.

- During filming, producer John Houseman recalled that his associate producer Jud Kinberg came upon a German-accented tirade whose recipient was "a little boy of eleven", Jon Whiteley, the only boy actor in the film.
- Stewart Granger said he hated working with Fritz Lang and called Moonfleet a bloody awful film; he had wanted to produce and act in it in Cornwall and made MGM buy the book.
- At one stage Merle Oberon was going to be the film's female lead, but Joan Greenwood was eventually brought over from England for the part.
- Fritz Lang said the smugglers work in the dark, on hazy days, so he planned to light his principals as in a play, dropping shadows at the sides of the stage to concentrate on the main action.
