Biography

Mexican and American actress and producer Salma Hayek started her career in Mexico, where she starred in the telenovela Teresa and the drama Midaq Alley before heading to Hollywood. There she broke through opposite Antonio Banderas in Desperado (1995) and followed it with From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), Wild Wild West (1999), and Dogma (1999). Playing painter Frida Kahlo in Frida (2002), which she produced, made her the first Mexican actress nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. Later credits include Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003), After the Sunset (2004), Bandidas (2006), the comedies Grown Ups (2010) and Grown Ups 2 (2013), the animated Puss in Boots (2011) and Sausage Party (2016), and the dramas Beatriz at Dinner (2017) and House of Gucci (2021). She also appeared as Ajak in Eternals (2021). Her television producing, directing, and acting brought four Emmy nominations, among them a Daytime Emmy win for directing The Maldonado Miracle.

Salma Hayek made her screen debut in the television series Un Nuevo Amanecer in 1988, and that role earned her the TVyNovelas Award for Best Debut Actress.

In 1999 Hayek set up Ventanarosa, a company for making movies and TV shows. Her debut as a producer was El Coronel No Tiene Quien Le Escriba, which Mexico submitted to the Oscars for Best Foreign Film.

In 2003, Hayek directed and produced The Maldonado Miracle, a Showtime film adapted from the book of the same name. Her work on it earned her the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing in a Children Special.
