Plot summary
Nine filmmakers travel to nine countries to profile one girl in each. In Sierra Leone, Mariama; in Haiti, Wadley; in Ethiopia, Azmera; in Afghanistan, Amina; in Peru, Senna; in Egypt, Yasmin; in Nepal, Suma; in India, Ruksana; in Cambodia, Sokha. Each girl's story is written by a writer from her own country, and each reflects her own struggle against the barriers in her path; the choice of which girl to follow was left to the writers. The filmmakers returned three times, first to interview candidates and gather material, then to work with the chosen writers and their subjects, and finally to shoot the segments, which actors narrate.

Robbins said his team made a first trip to each country for dozens of interviews to find the right girl to focus on, though the writers ultimately chose their subject; on the second trip the writer and girl spent time together, and only on the third trip did they set out to make each piece.
