Plot summary
On the steps of Notre Dame in 1480, Archdeacon Frollo finds an abandoned baby, severely deformed, and takes pity on him. He names the child Quasimodo and has him raised inside the cathedral. Twenty-five years later Quasimodo is the deaf, hunchbacked ringer of its bells. On the Feast of Fools he leaves Notre Dame for the first time, and Clopin, king of the Roma, crowns him King of Fools. The dancer Esmeralda captivates the crowd, and Quasimodo and the poet Pierre Gringoire are both drawn to her. Frollo, watching from a niche, is consumed with desire for her, stops the festivities and scolds Quasimodo for disobeying him.
