Quentin Tarantino
Biography
Quentin Tarantino is an American filmmaker, actor, and author whose movies are known for graphic violence, long stretches of dialogue, and pop-culture references. Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, he began in the 1980s with several jobs and screenplay work before his directing debut, Reservoir Dogs (1992), a crime film that was an immediate hit. Pulp Fiction (1994) brought critical and commercial success, the Palme d'Or at Cannes, and his first Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. He wrote and acted in From Dusk till Dawn (1996) and directed Jackie Brown (1997). Later came Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003) and Volume 2 (2004), the slasher film Death Proof (2007), part of Grindhouse with Robert Rodriguez, Inglourious Basterds (2009), Django Unchained (2012), which earned him a second screenwriting Oscar, The Hateful Eight (2015), and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). He has received two Academy Awards, two BAFTAs, and four Golden Globes.

First role
Tarantino's first Hollywood job was as a production assistant on Dolph Lundgren's exercise video Maximum Potential in 1986, working alongside Video Archives colleague Roger Avary.
A role that slipped away
After Reservoir Dogs, Tarantino was offered Speed and Men in Black by major studios, but turned both down to work on the Pulp Fiction script in Amsterdam.
A first
Tarantino was the first director to sweep "The Big Four" critics awards for his work on Pulp Fiction, taking LA, NBR, NY and NSFC, and as of 2025 the first of five directors to do so.
Behind the camera
Tarantino formed Rolling Thunder Pictures with Miramax in 1995 to release or re-release independent and foreign features, but Miramax shut the company down by 1997 because of poor sales.
