Biography

Cheech Marin is an American comedian and actor who gained recognition in the 1970s and early 1980s as half of the comedy duo Cheech & Chong, alongside Tommy Chong. They made comedy albums and a series of films, including Up in Smoke (1978). After the duo disbanded in 1985, Marin went solo, starring in and directing Born in East L.A. (1987). He appeared in Tin Cup (1996), The Shrimp on the Barbie (1990), and Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003), and worked frequently with director Robert Rodriguez on the Spy Kids trilogy, From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), and Machete (2010). On television, he played Inspector Joe Dominguez on Nash Bridges from 1996 to 2001. As a voice actor, he portrayed Tito in Oliver & Company (1988), Banzai in The Lion King (1994), and Ramone in Cars (2006), among other Disney roles. He also appeared in Christmas with the Kranks (2004).

    After Cheech & Chong broke up in 1985, Marin acted alone in several movies, especially Born in East L.A., which he also directed for the first time.

    In 1992, Marin won the first Celebrity Jeopardy! tournament. On March 18, 2010, he defeated journalist Anderson Cooper and actress Aisha Tyler on the Million Dollar Celebrity Invitational.

    Marin sings on "Earache My Eye," a hidden track on Korn's album Follow the Leader. The song is a cover of a Cheech and Chong original, performed by Marin as the fictional singer Alice Bowie.

    Marin is a keen golfer, but he did not like the sport at the start, until he appeared in the golf comedy Tin Cup. He also does horse archery on a course he had built on his own land.

    In 1968, right after he finished an English degree at CSUN, Marin tried out as a singer for Frank Zappa's group, The Mothers of Invention.
