Plot summary
Late 2011. Vincent Zaleski, a trader at a New York high-frequency trading firm, asks the venture capitalist Bryan Taylor to back a private trading operation that hinges on a fiber-optic cable running from the Kansas electronic exchange to the New York Stock Exchange. Taylor agrees. Vincent and his cousin Anton, a coder at the same firm, resign and set out to bury the cable in as straight a line as they can manage, because any bend costs time. Anton works to cut the transmission of an order down to sixteen milliseconds. Vincent brings in Mark Vega to oversee the tunnel's construction and helps him buy or lease the rights to land along the route. Their former boss, Eva Torres, is furious at the defection and argues that the code Anton wrote for the firm belongs to it.

- The film's high-frequency trading premise is rooted in real infrastructure: Spread Networks laid an essentially straight fiber-optic cable in 2010, saving about 175 miles over the existing Chicago-to-New York route, a race recounted in Michael Lewis's book Flash Boys.
