Plot summary
Shopwell's supermarket is home to food that believes human shoppers are gods who carry the groceries they choose to a utopia called the Great Beyond. Frank, a sausage, hopes to live there with his bun girlfriend Brenda. When a shopper buys their packages, a returned jar of honey mustard warns the other groceries that the Great Beyond is not real; only Frank takes the warning seriously, and Honey Mustard points him toward a bottle of liquor named Firewater. A collision on the way out of the store leaves Frank, Brenda, the Jewish bagel Sammy Bagel Jr., the Arab lavash Kareem Abdul-Lavash and a douche whose nozzle is bent loose among the aisles. Frank sets out to verify the warning.

- Sausage Party's animators were reportedly told outright they would be blacklisted if they refused to work overtime without pay; in late March 2019 the British Columbia Employment Standards Branch ruled they were entitled to overtime pay for their work on the film.
- Sausage Party, animated by the Vancouver-based Nitrogen Studios, is the first 3D computer-animated film in both the United States and Canada to be rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America.
- Sausage Party became the highest-grossing R-rated animated film of all time, taking the record from South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, which had held it for 17 years, until Demon Slayer: Mugen Train surpassed it in 2020.

- Composer Alan Menken spent over a year writing Sausage Party's songs with lyricist Glenn Slater, while the film's writers added a pun about the Holocaust ("eliminating the juice") and another about the sexual act of "tea-bagging".
