Plot summary
General Rafael Leónidas Trujillo rules the Dominican Republic, and Minerva Mirabal and her sisters Patria, Dedé and Maté live at the family farm in Ojo De Agua. Minerva persuades their father, Enrique Mirabal, to enroll her and two of her sisters at a boarding school, where Trujillo spots her in a play. With their schooling over, Minerva hopes to become a lawyer, but the law school does not take women. She falls for Virgilio, called Lio, who belongs to the Dominican resistance and nicknames her Butterfly, or Mariposa, and he has to leave the country. At a ball at Trujillo's palace, Minerva dances with Trujillo and asks him to let her attend law school.

The film is a fictionalized account of the real Mirabal sisters, Dominican revolutionary activists who opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo and were assassinated on November 25, 1960.SPOILER
The closing title card says the killing of the Mirabal sisters was the final blow to Trujillo's regime, that he was assassinated six months later, and that November 25 is observed in many Latin American countries as the International Day Against Violence Towards Women.
