Vladislav Dukhovich, the ousted president of Belarus, is tried at the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity. Interpol agent Amelia Roussel leads the armed convoy taking Kincaid toward the court, aware that someone inside her own agency may be working for Dukhovich. The convoy is ambushed, and Amelia asks Michael Bryce, a bodyguard whose career fell apart when a client was killed on his watch, to get Kincaid the rest of the way. Bryce and Kincaid share an ugly past, and Dukhovich's men are hunting them.

- The Hitman's Bodyguard was originally intended as a drama: the script was rewritten into a comedy in a "frantic" two-week sprint just weeks before filming began.
- Only one scene of the film was planned to be shot in Amsterdam, but when director Hughes visited the location and saw its surroundings, he moved some "London scenes" to the old inner city of Amsterdam.
