Plot summary
In 1837, the Pirate Captain commands an amateur crew that has yet to prove itself at sea. Fierce rivals such as Black Bellamy, Cutlass Liz and Peg Leg Hastings outclass him, yet he enters Blood Island's Pirate of the Year contest, in which the winner is whoever steals the most treasure. Repeated raids on ordinary ships yield nothing. The pirates board the Beagle and take the young scientist Charles Darwin prisoner, and he recognizes their pet Polly, thought to be a parrot, as the last living dodo. He urges the Captain to enter her in the Royal Society's Scientist of the Year contest in London, and the Captain, thinking the prize is money, sets a course for a city whose queen is said to hate pirates.
