Plot summary
Kate McQuean practices civil law in Miami, and in a divorce case she is handling, she asks a court to seize a freighter anchored off the Florida coast in place of alimony that went unpaid. The vessel belongs to Emilio Juantorena, a criminal, and it also serves as the base of operations for Ilya Kazak, who launders money across borders and leads a band of rogue former KGB members, among them Stefan, Leonide Volkov, Rosa and Zhukov. A stray bullet strikes Kate, and Max Kirkpatrick, a Miami police detective, is assigned to the case. Kazak's team then sets out to track her down and kill her, and Max becomes the one keeping her alive.

- In the original cut of Fair Game, Elizabeth Peña played Rita, Max's ex-girlfriend, and her name was on the poster and in the trailer, but test audiences thought she wasn't right for the role, so she was fired and replaced by Salma Hayek, who took the part because she was allowed to rewrite her scenes.
- Geena Davis, Julianne Moore and Brooke Shields were each offered the role of lawyer Kate McQuean but all turned it down because they were busy with other projects, and the part went to supermodel Cindy Crawford.
- Dan Hedaya's part in Fair Game was cut down to a single scene in the re-edit, so he chose to go uncredited, and the extra filming, added scenes and re-editing pushed the film back by three months.
- Cindy Crawford said producer Joel Silver kept asking how much more money she wanted until she agreed to star in Fair Game, even though she told him she was not an actress and did not want to be one.
- Cindy Crawford said she received zero direction while making Fair Game and that after the third week of the shoot the director stopped speaking to anyone on the set.
