The murderous couple Jack and Jill hold the magic beans that legend says lead to a giant's castle and its golden goose eggs. When Puss tries to steal the beans, a cat named Kitty Softpaws interrupts; Humpty Alexander Dumpty, a talking egg and Puss' estranged childhood friend from the orphanage, hired her. Humpty talks Puss into joining the hunt for the beans, though Puss still holds a grudge against him; the three take the beans from Jack and Jill.

SPOILER
Executive producer Guillermo del Toro ended up rewriting the film's ending himself, choosing to redeem the villain Humpty Dumpty and deepen his bond with Puss, an unusually dark turn for a family animated film; del Toro also designed the giant's castle and modeled the town's architecture on a mix of Spain and Mexico.- Amy Sedaris, voicing outlaw Jill, improvised so much of her dialogue that she recorded almost fifty different versions of her scripted lines for the filmmakers to choose from.
- Puss in Boots was the first DreamWorks Animation film partly made in India, where a Bangalore studio spent six months animating three major scenes, chosen largely because DreamWorks simply didn't have enough in-house animators to keep up with producing three films a year.
- Puss in Boots's $34.1 million opening weekend broke Saw III's record for the biggest Halloween-weekend opening ever, and that record stood for 12 years until Five Nights at Freddy's took it in 2023.
