Plot summary
Mousie and Sad Girl have been friends since childhood in Echo Park, a Los Angeles neighborhood with a long history of gang activity. Both belong to the Echo Park Locas, a girl gang whose names pass from one generation to the next, and both take pride in their loyalty to each other and to the gang. Mousie falls in love with Ernesto, a local gangster who sells drugs, and becomes pregnant with his son. Sad Girl also becomes pregnant by Ernesto, and the two women turn from friends into rivals. Whisper, another Loca, learns the drug trade from Ernesto.

- With the exception of the lead characters, the cast consisted of unknown actors, some of them actual gang members from Echo Park, and the film marks the first screen appearances of Salma Hayek and Jason Lee, both in small roles.
- The film is dedicated to the memory of a member of the Echo Park Locas who appears briefly in it and died after filming concluded. After the release, Anders and Film Independent set up a scholarship programme to help the kids of Echo Park with higher education.
- Allison Anders was inspired to write Mi Vida Loca after she moved to Echo Park in 1986 and became acquainted with members of the local gang, the Echo Park Locas.
