Plot summary

After leaving the OSS, Juni Cortez works as a private detective. President Devlin, the agency's former head, tells him his sister Carmen is missing, and at headquarters Donnagon Giggles and his wife Francesca explain that she is trapped inside Game Over. The Toymaker, a former OSS informant imprisoned in cyberspace, built the virtual-reality game to take control of the minds of children, and Carmen is stuck on Level 4. Juni enters to reach her and shut the game down. On Level 1 the challenges prove difficult, and he meets Francis, Arnold, and Rez, three players testing the game. Offered an ally, he brings in his grandfather Valentin, who uses a wheelchair and has his own history with the Toymaker; a robotic bodysuit lets Valentin walk and gives him superhuman strength.
