Plot summary
Chon and Ben are best friends and cannabis growers in Laguna Beach. Chon served as a Navy SEAL and carried the seeds home from Afghanistan, and Ben, who studied business and botany at Berkeley, turns them into a potent strain with a wide customer base. Ben supports charitable projects overseas. Both men are openly involved with Ophelia Sage, who lives with them. A video arrives from Lado, a Mexican cartel enforcer: severed heads, a chainsaw, and a demand for a meeting, where the cartel offers a partnership. Chon and Ben offer their network instead, but the cartel insists. Dennis Cain, a corrupt DEA agent on their payroll, presses them to accept. Ophelia is taken, and cartel leader Elena Sánchez warns that she will be harmed if they refuse.
