Biography

Mark Hamill is an American actor who gained fame for playing Luke Skywalker across the first three Star Wars films, beginning with Star Wars (1977). Before that he had television work, including a recurring part on the soap opera General Hospital. He returned as Luke in The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983), while trying to avoid typecasting with Corvette Summer (1978) and The Big Red One (1980). Stage work on Broadway followed, including The Elephant Man, Amadeus, and The Nerd. From the 1990s he worked mainly as a voice actor, and his Joker in Batman: The Animated Series became his best-known voice part, earning two Annie Award nominations and a BAFTA Game Award. He played Luke again in the sequel trilogy, including The Force Awakens (2015) and The Rise of Skywalker (2019), and later appeared in Brigsby Bear (2017).

  1. A role that slipped away

    Hamill played Mozart in the Broadway production of Amadeus in 1983. When the play became a 1984 film, he tried out for the same part but Tom Hulce got it instead.

  2. Big break

    Robert Englund was trying out for Apocalypse Now when he crossed the hall to the auditions for George Lucas's Star Wars. Watching for a while, he thought his friend Hamill would be perfect as Luke Skywalker and told him to try out, though Hamill's agent had already arranged it.

  3. First role

    Mark Hamill's earliest voice acting job came in the early 1970s, when he played Corey Anders on Jeannie, the Saturday morning cartoon from Hanna-Barbera Productions.

  4. Behind the camera

    Hamill helped write The Black Pearl, a comic book miniseries from Dark Horse Comics. For Simpsons Comics he penned stories such as "Catastrophe in Substitute Springfields!", a parody of DC's Crisis on Infinite Earths.

  5. A first

    Hamill starred in the 2011 Hungarian film Thelomeris, the first mainstream science-fiction film produced in Hungary, and also served as a creative consultant on the project.
