Plot summary
In an alternate twentieth century, a totalitarian American regime runs an annual televised contest meant to inspire patriotism and work ethic: fifty teenage boys, one from each state, walk nonstop at three miles per hour along hundreds of miles of road, escorted and broadcast by armed soldiers. A boy who drops below the pace gets three warnings before he is executed, and the last one still walking wins a large cash prize and one wish. Ray Garraty, Maine's participant, rides to the starting line near the Canadian border with his mother, Ginnie, who asks him to withdraw. The deadline for backing out has already passed, and he refuses. There he meets the other walkers, among them Peter McVries, Billy Stebbins, Art Baker, Collie Parker, Gary Barkovitch, Hank Olson and Richard Harkness, before the Major starts the Walk.

- The Long Walk was shot largely in chronological order so that relationships among the cast could develop, and the physically demanding shoot required the actors to walk 15 miles a day; director Francis Lawrence estimated that David Jonsson and Cooper Hoffman each covered about 350 miles during filming.
- On August 30, 2025, Lionsgate held a promotional screening of The Long Walk at the Culver Theater in Los Angeles where attendees watched the film while walking on treadmills; anyone who fell below 3 mph was removed from the screening.
- Lionsgate first asked Shaboozey for permission to use his song "Last of My Kind" in the trailer, and after seeing the film he was inspired to write an original song, "Took a Walk", with Stephen Wilson Jr., which plays over the end credits.
