Plot summary
Marty Anderson teaches middle school, and strange events are spreading: natural disasters, and the Internet going down everywhere. Billboards have begun appearing, each one carrying a photograph of an accountant, Charles 'Chuck' Krantz, together with a message of thanks for thirty-nine great years. Marty's ex-wife, Felicia Gordon, a nurse at a hospital, telephones him, and the two of them ask each other whether the universe is coming to an end. Marty brings up Carl Sagan's Cosmic Calendar, which squeezes the whole history of the universe into one calendar year, and both of them keep noticing more disasters and more supernatural events.
