Plot summary
A video of a UFO brings Zach Raymond sudden fame at his Wisconsin high school. Col. Lewis Teagarden of the U.S. Army arrives to look into the claim and finds that Zach faked the footage with a green screen and a model he built himself. Outed as a fraud, Zach takes a job at a local diner, where he meets Cara, a goth girl who reads comic books. She tells him the craft in his video looks just like one from her favorite comic, which he has never seen. Driving a co-worker home one night, Zach sees a real UFO, and craft that resemble his model begin lifting people from the town.

- During filming, local auto shop owner Réal Hamel was asked if he could paint four vehicles for the next day; he did, and the impromptu job made him one of Canada's go-to vehicle coordinators.
- Mark Hamill, who had previously worked for John Curtis on the alien thriller Time Runner, was brought back for Laserhawk, but his participation was kept secret during the shoot.
- At the end of the first week of shooting, a DAT recorder was stolen at a high school used by the production, losing a day's worth of audio, so an extra day was added to the schedule for reshoots.
- In March 1997 actor Ivan Rogers said the film would premiere at May's Cannes Film Market and was nearing completion, but it was not screened there and post-production dragged on at Motion Works with budget overruns, departures including an Emmy Award-winning lead designer, and material discarded by management.
- Laserhawk was the first co-production between British Columbia and Quebec, brokered by Toronto's Greenlight Communications, which had acquired a stake in Everest, with Peter Kroonenburg's Kingsborough Pictures of Montreal.
