Plot summary
Balto and Jenna's litter of six puppies is born in Alaska. Five take after their husky mother and are adopted at eight weeks old; Aleu, whose appearance comes from her wolfdog father, deters adopters and remains with Balto. A year later a hunter mistakes the grown Aleu for a wild wolf and nearly kills her. Balto explains her wolf heritage, and she runs away hoping to find her place. Balto sets out into the Alaskan wilderness to find her, troubled by dreams of a raven and a pack of wolves whose meaning he cannot grasp.

- Balto II: Wolf Quest was the last film voice actress Mary Kay Bergman contributed to; she died by suicide on November 11, 1999, and the film was released posthumously.
- A tighter budget and scheduling conflicts kept Kevin Bacon, Bob Hoskins, Bridget Fonda and Phil Collins from reprising Balto, Boris, Jenna, Muk and Luk; Maurice LaMarche, Charles Fleischer, Jodi Benson and Kevin Schon replaced them.
- Because of a significantly lower budget and faster turnaround than the original film, all of Balto II's animation was outsourced to the Taiwanese-American studio Wang Film Productions and finished in about 36 weeks.
