Plot summary
In 2654, the Terran Confederation fights the Kilrathi Empire in an interstellar war. A Kilrathi armada attacks Pegasus Station and seizes a navigation computer that reveals the way to Earth. Admiral Geoffrey Tolwyn calls the fleet home to defend the planet, though it will arrive two hours late, and sends Lieutenant Christopher Blair to the carrier TCS Tiger Claw with orders for a delaying action under Captain Jason Sansky. Blair and Lieutenant Todd Marshall, pilots fresh out of training, travel to their posting aboard the Diligent, a supply ship under Captain James Taggart.

- Mark Hamill, who voiced Blair in the games, was judged too old to reprise the role on screen, and Malcolm McDowell was originally set to return as Admiral Tolwyn but had to drop out after committing to the Fantasy Island remake instead.
- To beat Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace into theaters, the crew cut the planned 10-to-12-month production schedule down to six months, forcing Digital Anvil to abandon its plan to do all the visual effects in-house and farm some shots out to other effects houses.
- To stretch a limited budget, director Chris Roberts confined most of the action to spaceship interiors and shot largely on two sound stages in Luxembourg, aiming for the same claustrophobic feeling he admired in the submarine film Das Boot.
- Star Freddie Prinze Jr. later said he and Matthew Lillard signed on because they loved the script, but on arriving on location were handed a rewritten version he called a piece of trash, and that he still cannot watch a scene of the finished film.
- Director Chris Roberts stripped the alien Kilrathi of their signature fur for the film because he had never been satisfied with any live-action version of the creatures; he had already redesigned them once before, completely reworking the Melek character between the games Wing Commander III and IV.
