Plot summary

In 1982, Barry Minkow is a sixteen-year-old in Reseda who holds a gym job and a carpet-cleaning job. A gym member named Victor gives him steroids and lends him the money to launch his own carpet-cleaning company, ZZZZ Best. Attention from classmates and from local news follows the teenage entrepreneur, until the bank learns he is a minor and closes his accounts. To settle what he owes Victor, Barry steals money orders and convinces a second bank to open an account for him. A sports car and the cost of growing the still-struggling company leave him short, so he moves on to check kiting, forged credit card statements, and a staged break-in at his own office, with a crooked insurance adjuster paid to make the claim pay out. His overinflated success distances him from Mike, his friend and employee.
