Plot summary
One morning the residents of Midwich, a small town on the California coast, fall asleep where they stand and wake six hours later. In the following months, ten women of childbearing age learn that they are pregnant, among them Melanie Roberts, a virgin, and Callie Blum, whose husband Ben has been working in Tokyo for a year. Dreams lead them to keep the pregnancies. All ten give birth on the same night in a barn, and the children grow alike, with white-blonde hair, pale skin and cobalt-blue eyes, and are unusually clever. Dr. Alan Chaffee, the town physician, and Susan Verner, an epidemiologist sent to look into the pregnancies, watch the children as they grow, and the parents come to see that these are not ordinary children.

- In 1981 Lawrence Bachmann, head of MGM-British Studios when the 1960 film was made, said he would remake it: “I couldn't really do the book properly then. Twenty years ago, you couldn't talk about abortion; censorship didn't even allow you to mention impregnation. This time, we'll do it right.”
- John Carpenter was 12 when he saw the 1960 original, and it stuck in his mind: “I somehow got this incredible crush on one of the girls in the original. She was the first love object I had; I wanted her to zap me and take me over.”
- Bruce Nicholson and Greg Nicotero gave the children's psychic power a visual tell: their pupils appear green or red when the children apply moderate power over the adults, and turn bright white when they apply strong psychic powers.
- Carpenter shot the remake around his own home in Inverness and Point Reyes, California, the same area where he had filmed The Fog in 1979, saying it was "paradise" where he could set the camera down almost anywhere and get the shot.
- To give the child actors an otherworldly look, hairstylist Charlotte Gravenor bleached their hair and then applied white hairspray over it, making them appear alien.
