Plot summary
A vast wind current called the Slipstream circles a ruined Earth, and scattered settlements of survivors hold on. Bounty hunters Will Tasker and Belitski run down a fugitive in a canyon and fly him to a busy airstrip, where they eat with their handcuffed prisoner beside them. Matt Owens, a small-time arms dealer, makes a pass at Belitski, tries to sell contraband to Tasker, and then seizes the prisoner, hoping to collect the reward. Tasker fires a dart into him, saying it is poisoned; it also plants a tracking device, so the hunters can follow. Owens flies the captive toward his home, Hell's Kitchen. The prisoner quotes poetry on the way, so Owens takes to calling him Byron.

- Producer Gary Kurtz offered Mark Hamill the role of Will Tasker because he had always wanted to see Hamill play an antagonist; Hamill accepted to play against type, and it was his first film part since Return of the Jedi.
- Slipstream was producer Gary Kurtz's first production in four years, after his investments in The Dark Crystal and Return to Oz under-performed and forced him to declare bankruptcy in 1985.
- The futuristic aircraft flown by Tasker is the Edgley Optica, a real low-volume British light aircraft designed as an alternative to helicopters for law enforcement and low-speed observation work.
- Producer Gary Kurtz said in an interview that the script was originally much more violent, but those scenes, which would have made the plot more coherent, were never filmed, disappointing fans awaiting a director's cut.
