Plot summary
In June 2044 the Robotech Expeditionary Force assembles at Moon Base ALUCE for its last push to free Earth from the alien Invid. Among the fighter pilots are Maia Sterling, Marcus Rush and Alex Romero, born in space and never having seen the planet they fight for. General Reinhardt sends Captain Vince Grant and the Icarus to look for Rick Hunter, the REF's chief military commander. The assault goes well until the Invid Regis throws her remaining forces into one wave. Reinhardt reaches resistance leader Scott Bernard on the ground, who reports that the attack is going badly. With Scott on the ground is Ariel, an Invid princess who resembles a young human woman and hopes to persuade her mother, the Regis, that humans and Invid can live in peace.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Because Harmony Gold's agreement with Tatsunoko Production barred the sequel from using characters or designs from Super Dimension Fortress Macross, only one character from that series appeared, with a second cut to a deleted scene; both looked drastically different from their originals.
- Scott Glasgow's score was recorded with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, but budget problems forced synthesized elements into several cues, including four tracks in the film and the soundtrack track "Dogfight".
- The screenplay passed through numerous writers, among them science fiction author Robert J. Sawyer in 2003, before Ford Riley became the final screenwriter in July 2004.
