Plot summary
Emperor Palpatine, thought dead, sends a broadcast of revenge across the galaxy. Kylo Ren takes a Sith wayfinder from Mustafar and uses it to reach Exegol, the hidden Sith world, where Palpatine offers him an armada of Star Destroyers if he kills Rey. Rey is training as a Jedi under Leia Organa on the jungle world Ajan-Kloss. Poe Dameron, Finn and Chewbacca carry a First Order spy's report that Palpatine is on Exegol. With C-3PO and BB-8, Rey, Poe, Finn and Chewbacca fly the Millennium Falcon to Pasaana, a desert world, seeking a clue to a wayfinder and meeting Leia's contact.

- After actor John Boyega accidentally left his physical script copy in a hotel room, it turned up for sale on eBay for about £65; a Disney employee spotted and verified it as authentic and bought it back for an undisclosed sum.
- Lucasfilm stated on September 5, 2017 that Trevorrow had left the production following creative differences. The Hollywood Reporter reported that his working relationship with Kathleen Kennedy had become unmanageable after he failed to deliver a satisfactory script despite writing several drafts.
- Kelly Marie Tran's role shrank from about ten minutes of screen time in The Last Jedi to roughly one minute in this film; some critics saw it as a concession to fans who had subjected Tran to racist, fatphobic and misogynistic online harassment after the previous movie.
- Carrie Fisher, who played General Leia Organa, died on December 27, 2016, and Variety and Reuters reported that she had been planned for a key role in Episode IX. In January 2017 Lucasfilm stated there were no plans to digitally generate her performance as they had for Rogue One.
- Fisher's brother Todd, who had planned before her death for her character to appear in the film, revealed in November 2019 that "she was going to be the big payoff in the final film" and "she was going to be the last Jedi, so to speak".
- Billy Dee Williams returned as Lando Calrissian for the first time on screen since 1983's Return of the Jedi, a gap considered one of the longest intervals between portrayals of the same character by one actor in American film history.

The kiss between Rey and the dying Ben Solo was filmed both with and without the kiss included, and Abrams originally planned to leave it out of the movie before deciding at the last minute to keep it in.
