Plot summary

Mystery, Inc. has gone their separate ways because their cases always end with ordinary people in costumes. Daphne Blake now stars in a reality show hunting real ghosts, with Fred Jones as her cameraman. For her birthday, Fred brings Velma Dinkley, Shaggy Rogers, and Scooby-Doo back together. They drive across the country visiting haunted sites, but every monster is fake. In New Orleans, Lena Dupree invites them to Moonscar Island, said to be haunted by the pirate Morgan Moonscar. There they meet ferryman Jacques, Simone Lenoir, who employs Lena and lives in a mansion on a pepper plantation, the gardener Beau and the fisherman Snakebite Scruggs. Shaggy and Scooby encounter Moonscar's ghost, and the group receives warnings to leave. They stay overnight, still doubtful. That night, a horde of zombies chases Shaggy and Scooby.

Casey Kasem was set to return as Shaggy but, as a vegetarian, demanded the character give up meat; the team refused because eating was a hallmark of Shaggy and the film already had a crawfish-eating scene, so Billy West was cast instead.
Because the studio treated the film as a one-off experiment, the crew had little oversight and complete creative freedom; most of Glenn Leopold's screenplay was recycled from his script for the unfinished SWAT Kats episode "The Curse of Kataluna".
Stenstrum and Doi suggested in early story meetings that the film's monsters be real, but Leopold argued the franchise's mysteries had always been simple and solvable; model coordinator Lance Falk suggested combining both ideas.
Frank Welker was the only actor from the original series to return, as Fred Jones, but feared being replaced after producers thought his voice had dropped an octave; the voice director kept asking for a higher pitch until rewatching old episodes proved his voice was unchanged.
It was the first Scooby-Doo production to feature the entire adult gang, without Scrappy-Doo, since The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries episode "A Halloween Hassle at Dracula's Castle" aired on ABC on October 27, 1984.
The film was aided by a reportedly $50 million promotional push, with tie-ins including the Campbell Soup Company, SpaghettiOs, 1-800-COLLECT, Wendy's and Lego.
Heather North was set to reprise her role as Daphne but was replaced by Mary Kay Bergman after only one day of recording, while B. J. Ward, who had played Velma in a Johnny Bravo crossover episode, reprised Velma here.
