Plot summary

The First Order moves to seize military control of the galaxy, and General Leia Organa's Resistance evacuates its base ahead of the arriving fleet. Poe Dameron leads a counterattack against a First Order dreadnought, and the survivors jump to hyperspace, only to find themselves tracked. Rey reaches the planet Ahch-To with Chewbacca and R2-D2 and asks the exiled Luke Skywalker to return, but he refuses to touch the Force until R2-D2 plays him an old message and he agrees to teach her. Finn wakes from a coma aboard the Resistance ship asking for Rey, and while Leia recovers, Vice Admiral Holdo takes command and Poe questions her plans. Finn, the mechanic Rose Tico and BB-8 set out for the casino town of Canto Bight in search of a codebreaker.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Kelly Marie Tran, cast as Rose Tico, faced racist and misogynistic harassment that drove her off social media, and she was the first woman of color to have a lead role in a Star Wars film. John Boyega faced the same kind of abuse after The Force Awakens.
  • Yoda appears as a Force ghost made with puppetry, as in the original trilogy, rather than the CGI used in the prequels. Rian Johnson said a digital Yoda would not have been true to how Luke knew him in The Empire Strikes Back.
  • Mark Hamill disagreed during production with Luke's disillusioned direction, later regretting that he made his misgivings public, and compared the clashes to his arguments with George Lucas while filming Return of the Jedi.
  • SPOILERRian Johnson made Rey's parents "nobodies" because it was the hardest thing she and the audience could hear, likening the scene to Luke learning Darth Vader was his father.
  • Creature designer Neal Scanlan said the film used more practical effects than any other Star Wars film, building 180 to 200 creatures, some of which were cut from the final edit.
  • To keep Frank Oz's return as Yoda secret, producers left his name out of the pre-release billing and kept him on set throughout filming.
