Biography

Jon Polito was an American actor whose 35-year film and television career brought him more than 220 credits. He grew up in Philadelphia and went on to study theater at Villanova University after acting in high school. His off-Broadway work earned him an Obie Award in 1980, and the Coen brothers noticed him in a stage production of Death of a Salesman in New York. He worked with them five times, among those films Miller's Crossing (1990), Barton Fink (1991) and The Man Who Wasn't There (2001). For television he played Detective Steve Crosetti in the early seasons of Homicide: Life on the Street and Phil Bartoli during Crime Story's first season, and he returned as Crosetti in Homicide: The Movie (2000). His screen credits also include The Rocketeer (1991), The Crow (1994) and Big Eyes (2014), the last as nightclub impresario Enrico Banducci. Cinequest Film Festival gave him its Maverick Spirit Award in 2005.

  1. A role that slipped away

    For Miller's Crossing, the Coen brothers wanted Polito as The Dane, but he read the script and refused, insisting on the Italian gangster Johnny Caspar. After trying other actors, the Coens had him read the whole role cold.

    For Barton Fink, the Coens wrote Lou Breeze with Polito in mind, but he wanted to play the film producer Jack Lipnick instead. Frances McDormand talked him into accepting the role.
