Plot summary
Ralph Kramden drives a bus in New York City, and his wife Alice waits tables at a local diner to help them get by. Ed Norton, Ralph's best friend, works in the sewers, and Ed's wife Trixie waits tables alongside Alice. Ralph is always thinking up get-rich-quick schemes, and Ed joins in on them. Ralph's ideas include a series of motivational speaker tapes. What drives the two men is the wish to afford the kind of homes they think their wives deserve, and both couples have put aside savings toward a duplex in Brooklyn, though the money is not quite there yet.

- Damon Wayans had wanted to star in the film and unsuccessfully lobbied for the producers to make Ralph Kramden African American; ultimately Savoy selected Tom Arnold to play Ralph.
- Shooting had been planned to take place in 1996, but Tom Arnold received a $4 million offer to star in a film version of McHale's Navy, which led to the film stalling in development.
- The producers planned to excise Ralph Kramden's catchphrase “Bang, zoom!” from the film, out of concern for changing attitudes towards domestic violence.
