Plot summary
Three years after their first journey home, Chance, Sassy and Shadow live with the Seaver family, who are taking them along on a vacation to Canada. At San Francisco International Airport, Chance panics, taking the workers for pound handlers, and bolts from his carrier; Sassy and Shadow follow, and the three slip away from the airport into the city while the family's plane leaves without them. Home waits on the far side of the Golden Gate Bridge. A Boxer named Ashcan and his Bullmastiff friend Pete claim the territory and refuse to let the travelers pass; a band of strays called Riley's Gang steps in, and the gang's Delilah is sent to find Chance. The gang warns that the city is dangerous for pets, and that a red van collects stray dogs for a place called the Lab.
