Five interlocking stories in Los Angeles turn on taboos. Dedra Davenport meets Chloe, the fifteen-year-old daughter of her fiancé Dennis Marx, and is disturbed by how close the two of them are. Ginny Bai agrees to an unconventional act with her boyfriend Chad Bower and then cannot get an odd smell off her finger. In West Hollywood, Tom and Gerry adopt a seven-year-old African girl who refuses to speak. A nanny, Mary Jane, cares for a group of neglected boys in a mansion where the maid, Blanca Juarez, keeps the umbilical cord of her dead child. Sarah Cotton, a meek woman, is attacked by a stranger who breaks into her apartment.
