Plot summary
Two institutions hold their charges apart: a state youth reformatory where Joe Fisk, a juvenile delinquent, is confined, and a Catholic girls' school where Lisa Taylor is a student. Joe meets her by accident in a forest, where his peers chase her during a training exercise. He also watches as she floats in a lake, posing as Ophelia from a painting by John Everett Millais. Both institutions discourage contact with the opposite sex, and the attraction between them lands each of them in trouble. Forced to run away together, Joe and Lisa try to stay out of the reach of the police.
