Plot summary

During Prohibition, Leo O'Bannon runs the city as its political boss, with Tom Reagan as his right-hand man. Leo extends protection to Bernie Bernbaum, the bookie brother of his girlfriend Verna, who has been skimming from the match-fixing profits of Johnny Caspar, a rival mobster. Tom argues that Leo should hand Bernie over, and the dispute sets the two gangs against each other. Verna is also sleeping with Tom behind Leo's back. When the war escalates and Leo survives an attempt on his life, Tom presses his case and admits the affair, and Leo beats him in public. Cast out, Tom looks for work with Caspar.

  • Trey Wilson, who had played Nathan Arizona in Raising Arizona, was envisioned as Irish gang boss Leo O'Bannon, but two weeks before principal photography began Wilson died from a brain hemorrhage and Finney was cast.
  • The role of The Swede was written for Peter Stormare, but he was busy playing Hamlet, a role often referred to as "The Dane", so J. E. Freeman was cast and the character's name was changed to The Dane.
  • Sam Raimi, a friend of the Coens, appears as the snickering gunman at the siege of the Sons of Erin social club, while Frances McDormand, Joel's wife, appears as the mayor's secretary.
  • The budget was reported by film industry magazines as around $14 million, but the Coens have said the film cost "substantially less" than that.
  • On its initial release the film was a box-office failure, making slightly more than $5 million out of a budget put at $10 to $14 million.
  • The film's main theme has been used in trailers for a number of other films, including The Shawshank Redemption, as well as in an advert for Caffrey's Irish Ale.
