Plot summary
Ed Gruberman has no superpowers, a fact the court does not learn. He comes to the rescue of a woman in a dark alley; she calls herself Red, kisses him and disappears into the night, and the man he strikes is defended in court as an innocent bystander. A judge fines Ed one dollar and sentences him to a halfway house for superheroes whose powers have not yet developed. A cab driver who says he was once the superhero Manbat takes him there, where he meets Sarge and the other residents: Puffer Boy, Herman Brainard, Will Powers and Felicia Freeze, to whom Ed feels an immediate attraction. The group is sent out on a mission against the villain Captain Sludge and his Minotaur minion Cretan, who are holding up an armored car.
