John Turturro
Biography
John Turturro is an American actor and filmmaker born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens, New York. He earned a degree in theater studies and later a master's degree at the Yale School of Drama. His breakthrough came with Five Corners (1987), and he went on to a collaboration with Spike Lee, appearing in Do the Right Thing (1989), Mo' Better Blues (1990), Jungle Fever (1991), Clockers (1995), He Got Game (1998), and Miracle at St. Anna (2008). He also appeared in Coen brothers films, including Miller's Crossing (1990), Barton Fink (1991), which won him the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor, The Big Lebowski (1998), plus O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000). He won a Primetime Emmy Award for Monk and played Seymour Simmons in the Transformers series and Carmine Falcone in The Batman (2022). He has directed five films, including Mac, Illuminata, Romance and Cigarettes, and Fading Gigolo (2013).

First role
Turturro originated the title part in John Patrick Shanley's Danny and the Deep Blue Sea in 1983 at the Playwrights Conference at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center. He played it again Off-Broadway the next year and earned an Obie Award.
Big break
Spike Lee was impressed enough by Turturro's work in Five Corners that he gave him a part in Do the Right Thing. That film began a long partnership between the director and Turturro, spanning nine movies, the most for any actor in the Lee oeuvre.
First role
John Turturro made his first appearance in a film as an extra in Raging Bull, a role in which he did not speak. The movie came out in 1980.
Early training
Turturro earned a Bachelor of Arts in theater studies from the State University of New York at New Paltz in 1979. In 1983, he finished a Master of Fine Arts degree at the Yale School of Drama.
Behind the camera
John Turturro first directed for the stage in October 2011, helming the Broadway production Relatively Speaking, which consisted of three one-act comedies by Elaine May, Woody Allen, and Ethan Coen.
