Plot summary
Dagny Taggart oversees operations at Taggart Transcontinental, and the railroad is the main carrier in a country that has been depressed for years. An accident on the Rio Norte line prompts her brother James, the chief executive, to avoid responsibility. Dagny orders the worn track replaced with rails made of Rearden Metal, defying James, and negotiates with the metal's inventor, Hank Rearden; the two agree the deal serves each of their interests. Wesley Mouch, a politician who acts as Rearden's lobbyist, belongs to a group that sees industrial leaders as men to be broken or tamed, and James uses his influence to win Taggart Transcontinental exclusive rights in Colorado. The oil man Ellis Wyatt resents being forced to ship with the railroad.

- Director Stephen Polk was replaced by Paul Johansson only nine days before shooting was due to start, and producers John Aglialoro and Harmon Kaslow rushed into filming on June 13, 2010, because their 18-year option on the rights was set to expire two days later.
- More than 100,000 DVD inserts for the film were recalled within days because the jacket described Atlas Shrugged as "Ayn Rand's timeless novel of courage and self-sacrifice", a philosophically incorrect description.
- An earlier version of the adaptation had considered Angelina Jolie, Charlize Theron, Julia Roberts and Anne Hathaway for roles, but between 2009 and 2010 those deals came apart, along with studio backing from Lions Gate, and none of them appear in the final film.
