Plot summary
Ernst Haeckel, in the late 19th century, tries to create life the way Victor Frankenstein did, and every attempt fails. He hears of Montesquino, a necromancer he takes for a fraud. Word that his father is ill sends him traveling, and on the road he meets Walter Wolfram and Wolfram's wife, Elise. Haeckel feels drawn to Elise, and she to him; Wolfram does not object, though he has sold everything he owns for her care. Shrieks sound outside, and something in them draws Elise from the house. She also tends a baby, Haeckel sees. The account is the one Miz Carnation gives a widower at her cabin in upstate New York, who has asked her to restore his dead wife.
