Plot summary
On Thanksgiving in 1973, five-year-old Danny Kowalski helps his father, a doctor, deliver a baby at the Swan home. The girl is named Anna, and Danny announces he will marry her. Twenty-five years later he returns from England, now working to restore mosaic tiles and hoping to become a master tiler. He delivers a cake to the Swan house, where he meets Anna again and learns she is engaged to Eric. Danny also becomes acquainted with the Swan family: Nina, who is blind; Karen; Billy; and their mother, Grace. Convinced that fate brought him back, he sets out to win Anna, who resists him and favors her practical match.
