Plot summary
Billy Batson is an orphan in Fawcett City, recently turned out by his foster parents and now living on his own in a rundown slum. He goes to a diner to meet Clark Kent, a journalist writing about his situation, and their conversation is cut short when Black Adam arrives and declares that he means to kill the boy before the wizard can reach him. Clark sends Billy running and takes on Adam as Superman, and a chase carries the boy into the subway, where a homeless man he had tried to shield from bullies pulls him out of danger. The train tracks lead Billy to a vast cave, and there the wizard Shazam tells him that Adam was his champion 5,000 years ago, before he turned on his master, and that Billy is the next Chosen One.
