Biography

Eric Stoltz is an American actor, director and producer born in Whittier, California. After moving to New York in 1981 and studying with Stella Adler and Peggy Feury, he appeared in a minor role in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), written by Cameron Crowe, and Crowe later cast him in several more films. His performance as Rocky Dennis in Mask (1985) earned a Golden Globe nomination, and he went on to appear in Some Kind of Wonderful (1987), Pulp Fiction (1994), for which he received an Independent Spirit Award nomination, and Anaconda (1997). He has also worked on stage, including a Tony-nominated performance in the 1989 Broadway revival of Our Town. On television he has starred in Caprica and directed episodes of Glee, and he served as an executive producer on Madam Secretary.

    Stoltz studied acting in New York with Stella Adler and Peggy Feury after moving there in 1981, following his decision to drop out of the University of Southern California.

  2. Early training

    In the 1970s, Stoltz became part of a repertory company that put on ten plays at the Edinburgh Festival. He came back to the United States in 1979 and entered USC as a drama student.

  3. Big break

    Stoltz's first feature film was Fast Times at Ridgemont High in 1982, where he had a minor role and became friends with writer Cameron Crowe, who promised him roles in all his future films.

    Stoltz became a regular director of Glee and directed 12 episodes in total, among them "Nationals", where the Glee club at last takes the championship.
