Biography
Alan Cumming, the Scottish actor, filmmaker and presenter, was born in Aberfeldy and started his career on television in 1984. He made his feature film debut in 1992 with Prague. On stage, he won a Laurence Olivier Award for Accidental Death of an Anarchist and later a Tony Award for his role as the Emcee in Cabaret. On screen, he is known for playing Fegan Floop in the Spy Kids trilogy and Nightcrawler in X2, and he appeared in films such as GoldenEye (1995), Emma (1996), Romy and Michele's High School Reunion (1997), Eyes Wide Shut (1999), and Burlesque (2010). He co-directed, co-wrote, and co-starred in The Anniversary Party (2001). On television, he was nominated for Emmys for The Good Wife and won six Emmys for hosting The Traitors. He has also written a novel and memoirs.

Behind the award
Cumming won the 1991 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Comedy Performance for playing The Madman in the Royal National Theatre production of Dario Fo's Accidental Death of an Anarchist, which he also adapted with director Tim Supple.
Early training
Cumming formed the comedy duo Victor and Barry with Forbes Masson, a fellow graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. The pair appeared at the 1984 Edinburgh Fringe, and in the 1990s their characters became Steve and Sebastian in The High Life, which they wrote.
Getting ready for a role
Cumming had to go through six auditions for his minor role as a hotel clerk who flirts with Tom Cruise's character in Stanley Kubrick's final film, Eyes Wide Shut.
First role
Cumming's feature film debut came in 1992 in Ian Sellar's Prague, starring alongside Sandrine Bonnaire and Bruno Ganz; it premiered at Cannes and won him Best Actor at the Atlantic Film Festival.
Beyond film
Cumming played every role in Macbeth in 2012, working once more with Tiffany and the National Theatre of Scotland. He took the production to New York's Lincoln Center that year, then to a 73-show Broadway engagement in 2013.
