Plot summary
In Bedrock, Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble have just qualified as crane operators and hope to find dates. The Great Gazoo, a tiny green alien exiled to Earth who can be seen only by the two of them, offers to help. Wilma Slaghoople, whose father Colonel Slaghoople is a wealthy military veteran, wants an ordinary life, but her mother Pearl intends her to marry Chip Rockefeller, a suave casino owner. Wilma leaves home and meets Betty O'Shale, a waitress at the Bronto King, and moves into her apartment to work beside her. The men invite the two women to a carnival, where Fred is paired with Betty and Barney with Wilma until they switch. Fred wins an egg there, and it hatches into Dino, a small dinosaur.

- After the first film's success, Universal greenlit two Flintstones sequels to shoot back to back, but John Goodman refused to return as Fred Flintstone out of fear of typecasting, and Brian Levant retooled the project into a prequel.
- Alan Cumming was the first actor cast in Viva Rock Vegas, hired only to play the alien Gazoo, but after he performed as Mick Jagged at the table read it was decided he would play both roles.
- The film was originally planned as a full-blown musical, but Universal refused, and director Brian Levant was only able to include three musical numbers.
- Ann-Margret, who had a guest appearance on the original animated series as the title character in "Ann-Margrock Presents", sings the theme song, a slightly rewritten version of Viva Las Vegas.
