Plot summary
Vincent works in a store, but he wants to be a DJ, and his father expects him to run the family business one day. Victoria left dancing behind to work as an intern at a corporation run by Mrs. Grau, who gives her the job of walking Ichabod, her dog, and promises a promotion in return. The two meet on Halloween night and, with Ichabod, find themselves at This Place Hotel, at 777 Jackson Street. Bubbles, a bellhop chimp, Hay Man, the scarecrow groundskeeper, and Generalissimo Meriweather, the spider head of security, are among the hotel's inhabitants. Conformity, a witch, rules over them, forbids dancing and music, and threatens to turn anyone who defies her into a zombie.

- John Branca had worked with Michael Jackson since 1980, including on the Thriller music video, and said the singer loved Halloween; the renewed interest in Thriller each year helped spark the 2016 idea of a Halloween special of Jackson's music, in the minds of Branca and director Mark A.Z. Dippé.
- CBS took part in casting the special and recommended actors such as Lucy Liu, Jim Parsons and Alan Cumming, while rapper L.L. Cool J was also approached for the project but does not appear in it.
